Chicken Items I Recommend

With Prime Day coming up, I thought it would be a great time to make a post about the supplies I always recommend to flock owners.

If you don’t know me, I hope you check out my “About Me” section & leave a comment saying “Hi”. You can find me on Instagram & Facebook by searching for “The Silkie Chick”.

(By clicking on links, I may earn a commission from the purchases you make. My flock thanks you!)

Let’s get started! I recommend several things to other backyard chicken owners, but I wouldn’t recommend something that I’ve never tried. Everything I post or link is a product that I’ve used and would continue to buy for my own flock.

1. Poultry Vitamins/Supplements

If you own Silkies, this is a MUST! Silkies seem to be prone to vitamin deficiencies and need extra supplements to stay healthy. Here are some of the products that I use weekly for my flock. You don’t necessarily need to purchase ALL of these recommendations, but it’s important that you at least have one of these available at all times. I currently have all of these and I rotate between them each week. I only supply them with a vitamin supplement in their waterers once or twice a week. The other days they receive plain water.

2. Feed Supplements

I typically add most, if not all, of these supplements to their feed bucket. The FlyGrub are just treats, but they LOVE them!

3. Automatic Coop Doors

I have tried & own several automatic coop doors. I won’t even link the other’s that I’ve have because I wouldn’t purchase them again myself. If you want an automatic coop door, this is the only door I recommend. Take my advice, you NEED an automatic door if your flock free ranges! This is how my flock can free range, yet stay safe throughout the night.

4. Leg Bands

When hatching multiple colors of chickens, I use leg bands to identify which chick is which. When they are small, I use the rubber band version and as they grow I cut the band off and switch to the colored/numbered zip tie band.

5. Waterers

I don’t recommend many waterers because most are too difficult to open/close or too difficult to clean. These are the only two that I would purchase again. I use the heated water bowl year round except unplugged during warmer months. The deep bowl is easy to empty and clean but it also provides enough water depth for my ducks to clear their nostrils.

6. Feeders

I don’t recommend many feeders either. I use the first one for days when I am home. The bucket feeders I use when I won’t be around my flock for a few days.

7. First Aid/Medications

Unfortunately, no matter how hard you try, there will be times that your flock gets sick or injured. It happens no matter how hard you try to keep them healthy and safe. These are some of the items I recommend when it comes to certain illnesses and injures. I always recommend having them on hand in a first aid kit!

8. Chick Items

Here are the items I like to use when I have newly hatched chicks.

9. Mites

Mites are NO fun! I’m serious! Have some of these items before you regret a mite infestation!

10. Nesting Pads

I’ve tried nearly every option as far as nesting material and these are my favorite.

There are numerous things I alway recommend but these are just the most talked about items. I would love for you to comment below if you read this post! And if you have a topic/item that you’d like for me to discuss further, let me know.
